Boot loop and Unknown USB Device
I recently built myself a new mini-ITX gaming PC. Each component was chosen with care and gently slotted into place; or at least that's how I choose to remember it.
Case | BitFenix Prodigy |
---|---|
PSU | BitFenix Fury 650G |
Motherboard | Gigabyte Z97N-Gaming 5 (rev. 1.0) |
CPU | Intel Core i5 4690K |
RAM | G.SKILL TridentX 8GB (F3-2400C10D-8GTX) |
GPU | MSI GeForce GTX 970 |
OS | Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit), SP1 |
Keyboard | Filco Majestouch |
Mouse | Razer DeathAdder 2013 |
Behold my creation
Everything about my new compact gaming PC was pleasing, except for one problem. Almost every time I switched it on, it would reboot several times at the BIOS before eventually starting Windows. There were no error messages or beeps during this cycle. It was a mild annoyance at first but grew infuriating as the weeks passed.
Then, one day, it was joined by a second problem. When it would eventually boot to Windows, the message "USB device not recognised" would appear and my mouse wouldn't be working. I had to crawl under my desk and unplug the mouse for a few seconds to get it working.
I consulted the search engines
I tried various suggestions that I found on the Web.
- Reinstalling my chipset drivers.
- Reinstalling my USB3 drivers.
- Installing Windows Updates KB2685811 and KB2685813.
- Uninstalling Razer Synapse.
None of these made any difference.
The solution
I disconnected the CMOS battery from the motherboard for a few minutes.
When I switched my PC back on, it booted to Windows the first time and has continued to do so ever since. I no longer get warnings about faulty USB devices.
My DeathAdder is also working perfectly now; both before and after reinstalling Razer Synapse.
